This activity is an absolute favorite around here. It’s messy, but that’s probably why they love it!
We call it “Potions,” and it just involves mixing water together in all kinds of different containers. If you want to try it, I have some tips:
- Lay a towel or two on the table first.
- Give the kids a shallow container to keep it contained somewhat. We just use baking pans.
- Consider doing this outside.

Not only is this fun for the kids, but it’s really versatile. You can change it up to fit almost any theme. Here are some ideas:
- Color mixing
- Vinegar & baking soda
- Holiday themed (orange and green colors for halloween with spider mix ins, etc.)
- Ocean themed
- Flavor mixing (Combining different flavors of juice)
- Oil and water
- Density experiments
- Sink or float

If you want to try the color mixing activity, I have some printables you can use.
